Starting on a clean slate... or the closest thing to it
It has been quite a while since I first decided a blog would be an interesting and self-indulgent endeavor to undertake. After numerous months of procrastination and endless jabs by my motivating mother, I have, via a coffee and boredom fueled burst of inspiration, begun my first blog. The topic - or more accurately, the topics - of the blog will be things I am interested in (I've already admitted to my own self-indulgence, haven't I?). As a self-proclaimed dilettante, aka jack of all trades, aka pseudo poser, I think it would be wonderful to provide my presumptuous advice and opinion on a wide range of subjects, only a few of which I have any serious expertise in.
Naturally the first topic that came to mind was books. Anyone who knows me well knows I spend far too much absorbed in old tomes of ink and musty paper reading about men and women from centuries past in an attempt to bring their anachronistic ideas to the modern times. Furthermore I'm well into my list of "must read books." Developed from a list called "100 Books to Read Before College" that I acquired from a high school librarian, I've since changed it into "100+ Books to Read Whenever You Have the Chance." Especially considering the list contains the likes of David Foster Wallace's "Infinite Jest" and John Milton's "Paradise Lost;" two tomes I can't imagine any high-schooler sitting down with as a casual read (he said pompously). Continually adding books that have publicly been deemed "must read" and privately been deemed very enjoyable by myself, the list is just over 200 strong now. So if you find yourself in need of a book recommendations, why not try reading my often pretentious opinion on the matter and at least have a laugh at my expense?
The next subject is food. As a blatant fanboy of Anthony Bourdain and his cause of spreading appreciation of culture through cuisine, it is only natural that I add such material. Fortunately, the bulk of the food will most likely be coming from the practiced hands of my father, a former line cook and amateur chef extraordinaire. His ability to bend flavors to his indomitable will is one of his strongest talents and certainly one that I appreciate. Due to being raised in such a household and realizing in college how impressed girls are by even half-decent cooking, I find myself able to cook an occasionally brilliant, and more often sufficient, meal. Thus I will be offering a keen perspective on the meals I eat at home, the meals I cook myself, and the meals I eat at restaurants whose names I can't pronounce.
More bits and pieces will continue to be plastered on to my grade school macaroni art of a creation here. If I find that people legitimately enjoy my lackluster attempts at flowery prose and nigh overbearing self-degradation, then we shall move forward into the world of books, fine food, and other pretentious things that I will ramble endlessly about. If I find the opposite, I shall burn this blog to the ground (metaphorically) and from its ashes I shall rise as a phoenix.. or at least a pigeon on fire.
